N-BiG Technical Team Participates in FSC Group Scheme Training

During 4–5 March 2025, our technical team participated in the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Group Scheme Training in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. The training took place at the NCT Forestry Agricultural Co-operative and SAPPI Institute facilities, providing both theoretical and practical insights into FSC certification and its implementation.
A key highlight of the training was a field visit to FSC-certified farms, where participants engaged directly with plantation owners. These visits offered first-hand perspectives on the challenges and benefits of managing timber plantations under the FSC scheme. Additionally, an FSC Global Development GmbH official conducted in-depth sessions on FSC Group Scheme Management, providing valuable guidance on its application, particularly in relation to NamPower’s upcoming 40MW Otjikoto Biomass Power Plant.
The Otjikoto Biomass Power Plant, set to source woodchips from farms around Tsumeb, Namibia, relies on sustainable bush management for its long-term success. Implementing an FSC Group Scheme will be instrumental in ensuring responsible biomass sourcing, safeguarding biodiversity, supporting local farmers, and upholding environmental and social sustainability standards.
The training was attended by key stakeholders, including NamPower, N-BiG, NNF and IED. These collaborative efforts reflect a shared commitment to promoting sustainable energy solutions and advancing Namibia’s renewable energy sector.
